With more than 15 years in clean energy and sustainability markets and policy experience, we are excited to announce Matt Roberts joined Blue Planet Energy as Director of Market Development. Alongside our robust sales team, Matt will oversee market development activities as well as marketing and communications initiatives to help BPE capitalize on strategic opportunities and partnerships.
As the first employee and Executive Director of the US Energy Storage Association, Matt is an established energy storage industry leader and has played a key role in the rapid acceleration of ESS deployment. In that role, Matt served as the energy storage industry’s chief advocate and spokesperson, representing the interests of storage companies and allies in federal, state, and local proceedings and raising awareness for the storage sector as a whole.
Working with stakeholders and decision-makers from across the industry, Matt helped establish some of the first state-level energy storage targets, incentive programs, and market mechanisms that are enabling widespread ESS deployments today. Matt also hosted the first-ever White House Summit on accelerating energy storage, which generated more than $1 billion in new investment commitments and more than 1 gigawatt of announced projects.
Matt has worked with both established multinational and nascent clean energy companies and served on the boards of directors of leading advocacy and community organizations, including as a founder of the Global Energy Storage Alliance and Baltimore’s Tilt Studio Community Art Foundation. Matt has recognized expertise in sustainability and energy policy and will bring that experience to help accelerate Blue Planet Energy’s growth.
Matt started his career working as a press aide and speechwriter for Congresswoman Barabara Lee (Oakland, Berkeley) – a firebrand progressive with an infectious passion for community empowerment and clean energy, which was foundational to his career focus and trajectory.
Matt recently relocated to California from Washington, DC. Outside of the energy sector Matt is also an avid cyclist and served as the Executive Director of the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling outside DC, advocating for safer streets and communities. He currently resides in Ventura, CA with a 5-year old greyhound named Bowie.
